I check the attendance in classroom for several reasons. First the number of students is small. Second, according to the regulation of the uni, a student whose attendance is less than 80 percent is not allowed to sit for the final exam. Third, to make sure that poor students (not financially) shall attend the classes so that at least they have some clues on whats talked about in the classes. During the first week, I told to my students of all subjects that in case they couldnt attend the class for some specific and inevitable reasons (cases like hospitalization, funeral or wedding of family members) they should contact me. When the reason given was reasonable, theyd be regarded as present. This morning I got a phone call from a student and in a sort of polite language she told me that she wouldnt be able to attend todays class. I asked why. She said my sisters graduation ceremony. I thought I misunderstood her, so asked the same question again, but the answer was still the same. My dear students, you have full liberty to attend your family members graduate ceremony, but I dont think it can be regarded as a specific reason to exempt your from absence. You can do anything, but please take your risk.
