I chuckled a little bit. There are questions I still have, like how are you going to implement in locations where there isnt the online infrastructure? I also know that theyve literally had like A WEEK to think about this project and its grown exponentially since then. They need time, they need skill, and they need teachers, students, and parents to come forward to explain the needs of the real-life classroom. That was the problem with the Washington Post article. A) trying to fetch up against NCLB; I mean seriously, you guys. And B) not giving them the time. Of course theyre not going to have all the answers less than 24 hours after reaching their goal! I truly and wholly support the idea of inspiring a love of reading, it is an unbelievably noble goal. But I worry that the reality of low-income schools is still unclear, even for the leaders of this movement. Even in a very successful school like I was as, we were no where near a 1:1 technology ratio, which is what is going to be needed to make Reading Rainbow successful in the classroom. But that remains my only qualm. Infrastructure. The desire to create readers, independent learners - I fully support their efforts, and studies show that activities just like these are the most inspiring for students. Theyre doing the right thing.
