I condemn the violence against George Galloway. I regard it as an attack on freedom of speech. I do not agree with him about the Scottish referendum, but I would defend his freedom of speech. I also condemn those who have welcomed the attack because it has shut his trap - they are condoning attacks on freedom of speech. As it happens, this attack was nothing at all to do with the Scottish referendum. Galloway is an MP for Bradford, a city with a large Muslim population, and the attack was about his remarks re excluding Israelis from Bradford, to which many folk in the Jewish community took exception. Many Jews saw his remarks as not just critical of Israel, but inciting attacks on Jews. His attacker was apparently Israeli, and he was shouting about the Holocaust as he attacked Galloway. There has been an attempt, by some, to connect the grievous bodily harm committed against George Galloway with the extremely odd business of Jim Murphy getting egged. That attempt at making some connection is just ridiculous. Somebody was very clearly caught on camera, placing (NOT throwing) an egg on Jim Murphys back. Despite being easily identifiable, nobody can recognise this person. Nobody knows their motive, although it has been suggested this was a pal of Jim Murphys, giving him an excuse to call off his street speaking tour because of alleged intimidation. But even if this was a genuine protest, there is a very long tradition of pelting pompous politicians with poultry products. The politician concerned suffered no damage, except to his dignity. In Jim Murphys case, a politician got egged by an unknown person for reasons unknown. In Galloways case, a politician suffered grievous bodily harm for reasons that are well known and have absolutely nothing at all to do with the Scottish referendum.
