I congratulate Shaheen and the entire Teach For India team for making education a priority. Here are a few pointers from my today’s speech at InspirED India, St. Stephens: * Education has to be a matter of right, not charity. * Why is education not as big a priority as business or stock market? If Bombay Stock exchange falls by 400 points, it’s all over on media and politicians...but why not so about education? * When people feel so strongly about education, value it, why do political parties not even talk about it? Because it is not seen as development & governance, as an investment into human capital. * There are good people running private schools. But many are owned by politicians. It is in their interest to ruin government schools and education. Estimates suggest that Rs. 48,500 cr per annum in black money is donated to education sector. * In next 5 years, we want to improve quality of education in government schools such that people prefer them over private. * A primary school teacher on contract is given Rs 13,500 p.m. We have made clerks out of our teachers. * Inspector Raj is highest in education. It needs to be freed. * Autonomy is key - choose dedicated, honest, capable principals... Empower. Give resources. Create accountability framework. *The local community should be having a stake in their schools. It should be a symbiotic relationship. *Out of 5 lakh students taking admission in schools in Delhi only 2.5lakh pass 12th. Why? * For 250,000 college aspirants, there are 110,000 seats. No colleges have been opened in the last 20 years. *AAP announced 20 new colleges. Now BJP also announced it. We encourage BJP to copy rest of our announcements also. We wont claim copyright * We will set up incubation centres that will nurture entrepreneurship. Graduates will be job creators, not job seekers. * We will give guarantees to student loans. * Indians are entrepreneurs by nature. We will nurture this. Our population will be an asset if we can provide quality education to all our people *We need to invest in teachers. We need to stop their exploitation. We need to give them higher salary. *Our dream is to make government schools in Delhi better than private schools in next 5 years. *Finally, I want to invite all TFI fellows to give your inputs to AAPs education policy.
