I continue to be impressed by the work which is being done by the Affinity Intercultural Foundation on behalf of social cohesion. Their lunch time lecture series is superb. Today the address was given by Margaret Beazley, President of the Court of Appeal. Her topic was on observations from the bench on An Evolving Society. She addressed the themes of faith / cultural diversity and the law. She cited a number of recent studies - including one in which a Sydney church has wracked up legal expenses of $17 million over a case which began in 1997! She began with the separation of church and state; she noted that many use religious beliefs to fashion / organise ther everyday life. She emphasized how the law delivers justice according to the law and must be based on the intersection of evidence and principle. If that does not happen, if those principles are compromised, then the door is open for anarchy, favouritism and many things which do not make for the common good. She was excellent! Next Tuesday the lecture is on ISIS, Syria and Iraq.
