I could not have said it better. I remember having a conversation with my daddy shortly before he died. I was upset because someone I cared about had basically attacked me verbally about my beliefs concerning gays/lesbians and transgendered people. Granted, the beliefs I expressed were far different from what I had been raised to believe. My daddy was a staunch, conservative Baptist, but one thing about him, if I ever had a problem, even if my ideas didnt match up to his, he would always listen. So, on this day, I told him what my friend had said which was, Gays are going to hell, and so are you if you support them. Well, even though my daddy loved me beyond words, I halfway expected him to agree with the friend, considering how I knew he was raised and how he had often spoken about certain things in the past. But on this day, my daddy surprised me (well, not really, because as you all know, faults and all, I believed my daddy to be a good man). Cancer, by that time had ravaged his body. His breathing was slow, and he was on oxygen. His voice wasnt strong, but he took his oxygen mask off, and looked me in my eyes and said, Dont you worry about folks trying to claim hell for you or anybody else. I reckon when the day of judgment comes a lot of folks are going to end up surprised. The only thing you got to do is love, Baby. Thats all. Im sure daddy and I had many more meaningful conversations after that, but those words. Love. Thats all. Maybe, just maybe, that papa of mine knew what he was talking about. Thank you for your post today, David Gerrold. And thank you for reminding me that if were going to fight for anything, why not fight for love.
