I couldnt agree more with this article. Somehow our society has decided that dogs are like public property, or perhaps like glorified stuffed animals - anyone should be able to pet or hug any dog at any time. If the dog doesnt like it, well, then the dog shouldnt be in public / be around children / be at the family gathering / etc. Would you like a stranger running up to you and ruffling your hair? Why is that considered rude behaviour to another human, but acceptable behaviour towards a dog? You may accept and even welcome touches from loved family members or friends that you would never be comfortable with from a acquaintance, let alone a complete stranger. Our dogs are the same. Just because they like you scratching between their eyes doesnt mean they like it from someone they dont know!
