I couldnt be more happy with how all of our clients are starting to adapt to our Aerobic Capacity training once a week. Believe in the program and reap the benefits. For those of you still wondering why we work for 20-40 minutes at 70% output and monitor our heart rate once a week, this excerpt from an endurance article may hopefully shine some light on why we include this type of training. The natural relationship between slow-twitch muscle fiber, also known as slow oxidative (SO), and aerobic fitness is where endurance athletes make their living. Conversely, fast-twitch muscle fibers -- type IIa, also known as fast oxidative glycolytic (FOG) and type IIb, fast glycolytic (FG) -- are the bread and butter of CrossFitters. Muscles are made up of all these fibers and their distribution is dependent on training, genetics, and the function of the muscles they serve. To achieve optimal athletic performance, endurance athletes must develop the FOG, FG, and SO fibers to best access all sources of energy within the muscles. On the other hand, more CrossFitters would be well served to develop the SO muscle fibers (resist fatigue) to help build the capacity of sustainable energy release for longer periods of time, which helps offset the rapid rate of fatigue that occurs in the FG fibers (easily fatigued) and to a lesser extent the FOG (some fatigue resistance) group. Basically, in the long run, as we develop your SO fibers and aerobic capacity, my goal is to have your 80% output feel better and be better than your old 90-100% output. I want you to be able to resist a fatigued state as long as possible without having to come to a complete stop (or being forced to recover) during mid-range conditioning pieces (8-15 minutes). If you wish, buy a Polar Heart Rate monitor and keep your HR < 155 during these AC pieces. You will also learn how your body reacts to particular movements and movement combinations.
