I couldnt sleep lastnight until very late so I saw the reports & video clip of the terrible situation involving Tony Stewart & a quite young Kevin Ward Jr as soon as the news hit the net. Ive been to many races, especially dirt in my lifetime. Stuff happens VERY quickly, angers flare & racers already amped up on adrenaline & aggression often do questionable things on the spur of the moment. Most serious racers are Type A guys while suited up & behind the wheel. All that being said, I just simply DONT believe that Tony Stewart (or ANYOTHER competitor honestly) would MURDER or attempt to seriously injure another competitor! I never saw contact between Stewart & Ward, the video looks like Stewart went high & closed the door on Ward. Ward being a lifelong, serious racer himself, wasnt about to give Stewart an inch either so he ended up in the wall instead of backing off & going again. Where I DO see a problem is when Ward got out of the protection of his car before the safety crew showed up & decided then to walk into the cars as they came by. THAT move I believe cost him his life! I realize Smoke is a LOVE HIM OR HATE HIM kind of celebrity in NASCAR & Im afraid ALOT of the racing world fans will now hold this incident against him for the rest of his life. I dont have all the answers Ive often said I enjoy racings old days when drivers would climb out & go to fists right there on the track. But realistically this just CANNOT be allowed in todays hyper speed world. Ive read various reports of Tonys car having GoPro cams in it. If so Im sure theyll be scoured by the investigators. (The reactions & claims Ive seen & read are based on the single video being ran by the news. That clip shows NOTHING that supports ANY negative claim against Tony!) In the mean time the ONLY fix I can see for a situation like this is a rule change to prevent the drivers from getting out of their cars before help arrives. That incentive should be severe like a $ERIOU$ fine or immediate suspension for the remaining season. (Obviously in cases of emergency such as fire, allowances could be made.) Terrible situation for ALL sides & my thoughts & prayers are with Wards family & team.
