I crashed hard last night. So Im posting day 3 of my 30 days of thankfulness now: Im thankful for the wisdom of the young. Yesterday I directed 2 ambitious Sunday morning services. They featured the childrens choir, the All Souls Choir, the Akoma Drummers, organ, piano, harp and soloists. Rehearsal had been rough the preceding Thursday...never a good thing. Soloists had fallen ill. Scheduling conflicts abounded. But yesterday morning, I saw a beautiful group of children of varying ages, races, and temperaments make something truly magical. The joy just radiated through them as they sang the chorus of Florence+The Machines Shake It Out, a piece that was held together by a 10-year old harp player with nerves of steel. And the joy was reflected back at them in the faces of the grown ups, who could marvel not only at their cuteness, but also at their true enthusiasm for singing and participating in something so bombastic. So often we underestimate what kids can do and what they know. Yesterday, they reminded me of the reason I chose to be a musician in the first place: to spread joy and remind people of all the emotions they already hold inside them, perhaps too well-contained.
