I cross swords with libertarians over government intrusion into commerce for the purpose of protecting the rights of at risk segments of society. That is a potent weapon however and I differ with many liberals in that I believe protected class status should be very judiciously extended. Race is one clear example where Milton Friedman got it wrong. There is no indication that racial prejudice, while moderated, will be eradicated by economic rationality. This will be a social change empowered by social crusaders apart from the economic forces in the market. Minorities do not have enough clout in small communities to change anyones mind due to commercial considerations. That only happens in big cities and why they are the melting pots of our nation.
