I currently have a cup of D. hydei maggots squirming around in such proliferation that when I picked up the cup, I could actually feel warmth. This is tragic news. When I was little, in class we were given a tiny culture of fruit flies to learn about the insect stages of life. And I thought it was really cool. Then at some point where I was also still quite young, bringing the garbage bins back in on a hot summer day, I heard a really weird sound, a squit squit squit, very fast and very high pitched. I stood on tiptoes and looked down into the bin, and saw so many maggots crawling in the bottom and the sides, just a carpet of them, so many that their moving made a sound. That same summer, I came upon a tiny pink bird on the sidewalk. Its mouth was open, its black eyes still closed, and out of the mouth and from between the eyelids squirmed more white maggots. Since that summer, I havent ever been able to really look maggots in the eye. I dont really even know if they have eyes, thats how little time Ive spent with them. I file them on the same brain-shelf as sandwiches that had moldy bread that you didnt notice until the second bite. I just kind of want to forget that they exist. And I never want them in my mouth. But I talked myself into getting this adorable little micro gecko that I call Despicable Wyrm, and to keep her happy, she gets these fat tiny flightless fruit flies. And its kind of a pain in the butt to try and find fruit flies in local stores all the time. So I bought the supplies to make my own cultures. And unfortunately, maggots are a part of that. So, me and maggots, we spent a little time together, and I thought we had come to an understanding. Apparently, they decided to do way better than I thought they would for me, which means that they have betrayed me, because now Im going to have to get a hell of a lot more tiny tiny geckos to keep them in check...
