I debated whether to share this or not. The reality of this kind - TopicsExpress

I debated whether to share this or not. The reality of this kind of didnt hit me until today. Ive taken always knowing cpr (for over half my life) and first aid for granted. My very first job at age 15 was teaching swimming lessons and lifeguarding. And now my job requires that I am always up to date with my certification in the dental field. My husband is a emt/firefighter so this kind of just comes second nature to both of us. But with Jack on the tail end of Rotavirus and being cooped up the last few days, he is limited on what he can eat right now, so we had a mommy son date to get pho (for me) last night and one of his favorite foods white rice which is one thing he can eat with rotavirus. As he is putting fistfuls of rice in his mouth and eating like a typical toddler I notice him starting to gag, turn red, I gave him about 10-12 seconds to recover it for himself because sometimes its just a really big bite, but this time he was actually choking, for the very first time in his life. I was able to grab him from his chair and give him the infant Heimlich (back blows) after the 3rd for 4th one it all came up and out. I was surprisingly very calm, some of the others in the restaurant werent so much at this point. But I just knew what to do and was glad to be able to do so calmly with out a second thought. I encourage anyone around children to take a cpr class or at least read through and familiarize what you are supposed to do. I was having coffee with a friend this morning and she is in nursing school and was telling her about what happened and I realized I hadnt fully processed it. Had I not known, its crazy to think about calling/waiting/panicking that could occur if you arent familiar with what to do. Please for 2015 make it a goal to make sure that all you and any grandparents or caregivers either take a class or are given a run through in what to do. Its just something you dont think about until it actually happens to you. redcross.org/images/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m4240176_ConsciousChokingPoster_EN.pdf
