I decided I wouldnt write anything about the passing of comedic great Robin Williams. After all, what more could I add to the scores of epitaphs that were bound to deluge facebook, the TV media and every tabloid in America? But then I remembered an episode many years ago when I worked for a concierge company at the Las Vegas Executive Air Terminal. I had an office at McCarran International Airport that was glass enclosed and visible to all the foot traffic traveling to and from the private jets. Entertainers, sports stars, and captains of industry regularly passed by me every day. Seeing famous people in Las Vegas is not unusual. I recall one day that I glanced up and I saw Robin Williams just a few feet away from me as I worked at my desk. Our eyes met, he realized that I recognized him, I smiled, and he waved his hand at me as he walked out to the tarmac and his waiting jet. It took only a moment. In the Grand Scheme of things, it was an unimportant incident. But with the event of his passing Ive given the moment some thought. Ive often measured my life as memories, as snapshots of things that have happened to and about me. After almost 60 years I find it hard to remember the vast majority of the daily events that comprised my life. My guess is that probably holds true with most everyone. And so it is important, valuable even, to capture moments and to retain them for as long as we can. Thank you Mr. Williams for reminding me of that. Godspeed.
