I decided to test my kindergarteners mathematical thinking limits - TopicsExpress

I decided to test my kindergarteners mathematical thinking limits on Friday. I split the students into groups of three and handed each group four paper squares. I told the class that the four squares represented cookies, and that I wanted each group to figure out a way to share the cookies so that everyone got an equal share. No other directions were given. Within ten minutes all seven groups had solved the problem in different ways. As I pointed at each group and yelled, correct! The groups broke out into wild cheers. Next I asked a spokesperson from each group to come to the overhead with their solution and justify their answer. I was nothing less than impressed with the methods they used to arrive at a viable solution. I am so proud of this group of kids and how well they were able to verbally defend their answers. I cant wait to turn them loose in first grade.
