I decided to try a few different broadheads this year. So far, Ive shot deer with the Dirt Nap Gear single bevel, Rage Xtreme and Rocket Hammerhead 2 3 blade. Before I start, I will say the Hammerhead is the most accurate head Ive ever shot. If I had to shoot for money, thatd be the head Id use. Out of my rig, they are as accurate or more so than my field points. I put the Rocket on today in hopes of smashing a doe down. Early morning found this 8 point slipping down the bunny trail and I hit him exactly where I was aiming. The track was one of the best blood trails Ive ever been on, at times 6 wide and there were several spots where it was a constant red line for 10-15 yards. After 50-60 yards and about 30 minutes after the shot, I bumped the deer and really couldnt believe he was still alive. He was having one more tough time moving, so I backed out very slowly. I gave him about 1.5 hours and went back. After replaying what had happened and the evidence I had seen, I felt like I may have hit him thin, one lung and possibly heart. He was broadside and I hit him in the crease behind the shoulder, exactly where I was trying to hit. The buck went about 150 yards from where I bumped him and died in a pine thicket. It seems a blade may have caused the broadhead not to enter, but push out and leaver over causing a large cut and more of a glancing blow instead of going inside the chest. When the buck was moving off where I bumped him, I could hear the sucking of the chest wound and felt pretty good about the shot even though he was on his feet. Upon the find and inspection, thats exactly what happened. One blade managed to cut between two ribs and get some of the heart/lungs on its way down. A fixed, coc or rear deploying head would have entered and put him down quicker. It was a close shot, about 10 yards. A shot Ive made many times before. At the angle and distance there is a fine line between where I hit this deer and hitting too high or too low. My intention is not to bash, but to state my experience and reasoning for not shooting this style again. Take it FWIW
