I did a double-feature today on the big screen, with a free ticket I finally caught Maleficent. After How To Train Your Dragon 2, Maleficent was a bit of a disappointment. It was pretty linear and once you understood the angle of the re-image, pretty predictable too. As I feared, it has more in common with Snow White and the Huntsman where the trailer was more intriguing that the final product. There is an aspect to this film that is important though, it really is a woman lead story. The young Disney Princess ladies in front of me seemed to love it. Despite the dark look of Maleficent I think it is more of a kids movie. After Oz the Great and Powerful took L. Frank Baums female lead world and focused on a guy, I am glad to see things come back around. I just wish this one had a better ageless balance. C+.
