I did my wash today including bed sheets and I was reminded of my mother and going to the laundry mat where there were, now old fashion washing machines with ringers to squeeze the water out of the clothes. They were called ringers which I got my hand and arm rolled into one, a terrifying moment but there was a safety spring that opened the rollers instantly saving me from being rolled over like the violent cartoons at the movies and made flat. Ever hear of a woman getting her tit caught in a ringer? These machines were good at catching loose tits. Mom would take all the rung out wet laundry home and put it out to dry on a cloths line to be sun and fresh air dried. When my sheets were brand new dried on my bed I would start at one edge of the sheet sucking my thumb, age 3 or 4, and move from one side of the sheet smelling the beautiful fragrance of sun dried sheets along the edge. I never made it to the other side before falling asleep. Now the clothes dryer that is just a machine and the washing machine has no character and stinks most of the time. Now I know these things are invented to help people with extra time especially those who have families that are too large like more than 2 spread apart by 3 years. I would watch my mom iron my dads kakis and use a Barqs Rootbeer bottle with a sprinkler stopper to wet the cloth before putting the iron and the smell of of the steam lingers on. I still have that bottle, somewhere. Where I live now clothes lines are not allowed as in many other communities. I think Ill put up one because all the rules dont matter anymore except to a few who dont matter anymore. Save energy and put up a clothesline. Since I dont recycle this would be my contribution to the next generation that for the most part dont give a shit about anything. I dont like to generalize, but a generation is 33 years. Since Ive been on this earth I think at least one or two have been lost to other endeavors rather education. Long live Ed Abbeys memory.
