I did not write this, but I am very glad that it has been written and serves as a counter to any accusations of far right groups taking over the Ukraine. The protests in Kiev most certainly held two notable nationalist groups: Right Sector and Svoboda. The two - especially the Right Sector, which views Svoboda as too liberal- are far-right and arguably fascist, if not quite fully neo-nazi. These groups played a large part in the escalation of hostilities, and took part in some of the most violent confrontations with security. But after Yanukovych fled, the Right Sector didnt acquire any visible position in government. Svoboda, which was already an official part of the opposition coalition, on the other hand, maintained four positions, mostly in ecology and agriculture. It remains a minority in a coalition consisting of center and center-right liberals, with its leader not holding any position within the government, not to mention the whole government (remember, not the entire government was overthrown, or rather, thrown out, as the occupiers were already a part of the government before the protests). So, Yanukovychs overthrow was unconstitutional, but it was not done by a neo-nazi group. He was overthrown by a combined popular rallying of mostly center-left to center-right groups, who likely represent a majority of the population of the Ukraine (its difficult to say for certain, given the divided nature of Ukrainian politics). As a side note, a poll conducted in 2013 found in the event of a presidential election, Yanukovych won less than 28% of the vote. He wasnt a man who enjoyed popular support. Please take this to heart when you next see accusations of neo-nazi take overs in the Ukraine.
