I did some more Chelsea rounds yesterday- some good shows. Richard Nonas does work that falls outside my usual range- and I think his work is really great. Hes been around since the 70s making minimalist sculpture, but I didnt really get it until his show at Fuentes Gallery last year. This show, at Fergus McCaffrey on 26th St, was more of a retrospective. What I like about his work is that with the slightest of gestures he makes work that suggests something shamanic and magical- I mean there is no overt Jungian yadda-symbols, just the way opposing grain patterns of three pieces of wood accentuate the nature of each other, or how two simple lumps of cut steel, in their simplicity and oddity, call attention to the shadow-like surface oxidizations, making them like living things. I took a few pictures before my phone ran out of juice- a selection for now. The way shape and surface interact and feel otherworldly reminds me off how I see the corners of the world when I really look.
