I didnt watch the Super Bowl last night so I missed something that is causing a lot of commotion on the internet today. A Coca-Cola commercial featured the song America the Beautiful sung in different languages (link below). Not sure where I stand on this. Not sure it is even worth a stance. But here are my immediate thoughts on this. Im glad the song was pro-America. As for the different languages that could be chalked up to artistic license and was merely a way of demonstrating the various people who have come to America (legally, of course) to join in the American dream. On the other hand we do need a lingua franca (common language) if we are to survive as a country. If we cant communicate with each other our society will fall apart. My ancestors were German speaking immigrants and at least three fought for the colonies in the American Revolution so Im not asking recent immigrants to make any greater sacrifice than that sacrifice my immigrant ancestors made. For an example of how speaking multiple languages can divide a society just look at Genesis 11:1-9 (the story of the Tower of Babel). But with the current debate over illegal immigrants I cant help but wonder if people are reading too much into a commercial. After all it is just a commercial, not legislation. Imagine the problems if we decided to write legislation in both English and, say, Spanish. We have enough problems with lawyers twisting English to fit their needs. Anyone remember Bill Clintons infamous It depends on what the meaning of the word is is defense? Just imagine what lawyers would do if we had laws written in multiple languages considering that some ideas dont always accurately translate from one language to another. I can hear it now; Well what he did may have been legal according to the English version of the law but is clearly illegal according to the Spanish version. We dont need that nonsense. So is this commercial worth all the commotion? Not sure. Your opinions? Heres the commercial. youtube/watch?v=A8iM73E6JP8
