I discovered Dona Gracia Nasi Mendes after learning of Sephardic traces in my DNA in 2007 ~ What an incredible woman of beauty, culture and wealth! An inspiration and extraordinary role model for (business) women today. She made courageous decisions and is such an inspiration to me. She was able to express her love and compassion even while being immersed within the dynamics of ‘conflict’ , Thousands of Marranos and other persecuted Jews called her by no other name than Our Angel. Gracia (Hannah) - she was born into a Sephardic family that was forced to run from Spain when Catholic rulers forced them out in 1492. In 1528 Gracia married Francisco Mendes in a public Catholic ceremony, (and later had a secret Jewish ceremony) When he died, she was left to take over his financial empire- trading precious objects and spices. She used her wealth and influence, and spent her money wisely. Her devotion to Israel and Jewish life symbolized triumph over adversity and remarkable efforts on behalf of her fellow Jews. May her story be an inspiration for this generation ~ one that will redeem the time of centuries past, as we step into our destinies.
