I discovered last night that my favorite singer, Jean Redpath, passed away of cancer in August at age 77, Here is a link to one of her songs from the Prairie Home Companion: https://youtube/watch?v=_wRZb9zuqks. I have followed this iconic Scottish singer for decades after first seeing her on A Prairie Home Companion (PHC) where she often performed with Garrison Keillor. Jean Redpaths voice was like crystal and she could roll the Scottish r like no other. A renowed singer of Scottish folk songs, she also sang American folk songs and performed with style and humor on the PHC. A scholar of Scottish music, particularly Robert Burns, her portrait hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. i have been playing her music today. In Garrison Keillors tribute, he modified the words to Wild Mountain Thyme and sang She is gone, there will not be another. Her last concert was April in NYC and she looked fine so this was such a surprise. Redpath came to this country in 1961 to attend a wedding in San Francisco. With $11 in her pocket, she managed to get to NYC where she met and lived in an apartment with Bob Dylan and other musicians. Pete Seeger was an early promotor of Redpath and she was immediately discovered and the rest is history.
