I do desperately want Australia to be a republic. These were the words of former PM Julia Gillard In this interview about her book with republican Ray Martin, who curiously did not ask her why she did nothing to fulfil her wish. ( Mr Martin is associated with Peter FitzSimon in the new flag movement) Kevin Rudd had obtained a 99% vote supporting a republic at the 2020 Summit, but no such gerrymander appealed to Ms. Gillard. (Senator Brandis alone dissented at the 2020 Summit. He had probably been appointed on the misapprehension that he was a republican) She no doubt was advised that polling and focus groups indicated that a second referendum would receive an even bigger defeat than the 1999 landslide. The government did however bend the rules and weight the financing in order to win the Local Government recognition referendum. This did not proceed when the leadership was again changed and Mr. Rudd returned briefly as prime minister. [Preview video: https://youtube/watch?v=qUigX3brdxA&list=UU7HZ5uBTih75iwtesU0aDew]
