In short hes talking about the divide in the way we speak brought on by the Nroman invasion. Many of our posh words are Anglo-Norman in route (the language spoken by the oligarchy of the time) and many of our casual words are Anglo-Saxon in root ( the language of the workers), and its weird how this truly does create something of a rift in society, especially when we kick in considerations of people talking proper and how it values them in society and the work place. This usual sends me on a rant about why southern people are taller and more attractive and how that comes down to the genetic development of different economic and social barriers. Anyway, Tom Scott, talks like a toff and goes on about English stuff but does so in a very educational manner and has a great series of Did you knows that made me miss gasometers and Ill try and win you over with his linguists approach to the gender neutral pronouns.
