I do not have any pictures but if you are familia with Joe Fluetts Store on Brown Street...close your eyes as my sister Gail and I head to Joes for a daily visit many years ago...we have found two small green coke bottles that are worth $.03 each at Joes...We found them up by the railroad tracks....As we enter his store running the screen door swings back at us.....we are 5 and six years old...we stop quickly as Joe hollers hey hey slow down there...we stop as there before us is the huge glass case filled with penny candy....There are root beer barrels ....bubble gun..dots on a paper of pink ...yellow and green...and squirrels...a.nut combination .......rings not plastic but tin with ruby and deep blue that you can squeeze to fit your finger....they were beautiful when you held them up to the sun.... A chocolate confection with cream in the middle and covered with coconut... etc etc....to the right were shelves filled with peanut butter ..... carrots and anything else you might need.. ...When we bought something we had to pay with bottles or nickles our aunts gave us. ......But my dad didnt have to pay for anything at Joes because when he sent us to the store for bread or donuts....we just would say My dad wants a loaf of bread and Joe would give it to us .....pretty amazing...never realized we had a running bill that my dad paid every Thursday ...pay day until many years later... As you went up the right aisle in the center was the counter where Joe put your purchase to bag it... Then was the red soda machine...it had a really nice bottle opener built into it...It was filled with ice and water right up to the top of the bottles....You could tell by the caps what sodas were in there..like orangeade....7 UP...Coke ....Raspberry my favorite.....etc etc...at the back of the store was the meat counter.....sometimes there were dead chickens with no feathers but did have feet and a head.....very scary...Gail liked to see them but not for long......we also liked to watch Joe put meat into a machine and meat came out looking like spaghetti.....thats hamburg he called it... As we made the corner there were mops and brooms and. Finally we were at our favorite place Funnybooks...Little Lulu.. Archie...Superman etc etc. When Joe was busy helping customers...we could read all we wanted And finally he would say your mother called and wants you home. ...and off we ran as the screen door closed behind us..... We miss you Joe....You were a good neighbor..... This is Brown street history as seen thru the eyes of ....Cynthia Knight McGarry in 1948.
