I do not know what others see when they look at the vacant house - TopicsExpress

I do not know what others see when they look at the vacant house covered in graffiti, its windows broken and soul destroyed, reliant on the goodwill of the city for the occasional paint and increased police presence necessary to preserve what remains of neighboring property values. I do not know what others think when they see such a place in the midst of an area so economically distressed that homeless people wander aimlessly during the day to avoid being charged with vagrancy, then sleep wherever they might feel marginally safe at night. I only know what I see. I see a home waiting to be occupied and cared for by someone in desperate need of shelter - a home held in the portfolio of some banking behemoth in another state, with no ties to or concern for the community existing around it, and no awareness of its existence beyond that of an “asset” that is rarely (if ever) disaggregated. There is a fine line between profit motive and Social Darwinism, and we crossed it decades ago. It is imperative that we vote wisely while suffrage is still universal. We are not far as human beings from sharing a fate similar to that of this house, and if we allow this to happen, I’m afraid we deserve it. Daphne, The Progressive Commons
