I do not understand what it is that anyone wants to solve as the Kashmir problem! Kashmir acceded to India under the special dispensation of Article 370. As such, Kashmir is an integral part of the Indian federation. Instead of pulling and pushing against Article 370, consider it the written document that formalizes the relationship of Kashmir with India permanently. In the United States of America, all states are part of a federation in writing. With us, only Kashmir is a part of the federation in writing. To my mind, that actually strengthens Kashmirs relationship with India! As far as the separatist call is concerned, we need to ignore those completely. There is no need for us to even acknowledge their existence except as an occasional fly that alights on ones nose. The claims of Pakistan and the consequent geopolitical interest of China are a matter we have been handling deftly and can continue to do so indefinitely. Pakistan is not an existential military threat - their occasional adventures have cost them far in excess of what they hope to gain from those adventures. Their experiments in gaining strategic depth through the use of jihadis, has brought their own nation to its knees. China, a belligerent regional hegemon, is the real challenge in the region and their century old quest for a warm water port is now a desperate one. But after Indias acquisition of nuclear capability and our ability via the Agni-IV vehicle, to now deliver such payloads deep into the heart of China, their future belligerence will likely be limited to border skirmishes that will not allow India to consider a nuclear option. We require the capability to strike China at our borders, not to militarily gain parity with them anywhere else. At the back of our minds always remembering, that as the worlds de facto factory, its quest for a warm water port is being frustrated only by Indias control over J&K, even if, as the worlds de facto factory, they can no longer be war mongers. The Kashmir problem is actually the China problem.
