I do realise that PETA has been pushing for a very long time but we must keep sites on pushing back at them. Lets work hard to tell it like it is. Here is my opinion on why those shearers where battling with the sheep. If a farmer was to let a sheep empty out the grass and water from its belly the sheep would sit more comfortable and quieter for the shearer to be able to shear the wool off. If a sheep has a full belly of grass and water it feels uncomfortable and therefore KICKS, KICKS and KICKS all the way through, whilst the shearer is trying their hardest to hold on to them and shear them. It is extremely dangerous for a shearer to shear full sheep because they can be injured with severely deep cuts, wounding their body so bad that they can not continue to work. I have seen some really horrific wounds, cutting the shearer so bad you can see their bone. Sometimes a sheep will kick the handpiece away from the shearer injuring the next shearer beside them or the woolhandler who is removing the fleece away from them. I was born into the Shearing Industry and it is always been so distressing having to watch the pain and agony a Shearer goes through trying to hold on to full sheep. They are using all their might, power and any little last bit of energy they have left to get through it. It is not nice to hear the cry of agony/swearing when battling against such odds. I can assure you it takes more skill than a rugby player to accomplish such a feat. Shearers have to battle like this for eight hours of the day, everyday if the farmer will not empty out the sheep. It is such a beautiful atmosphere in the shearing sheds when the sheep are empty. The sheep are more relaxed, the Shearer is happy and the shedhands enjoy their day as well with lots of laughter to go with it. It was not fair that PETA told the world to stop buying wool. I back the shearer one hundred percent! Cruelty to a Shearer is also a crime and they too deserve to be treated with kindness and respect. I wholeheartedly know that any Shearer would complete there day with ease if you gave them half the chance. Empty the sheep out so the hard working shearer does not have to fight with the entire flock all day. That equals no abuse to both the sheep or the Shearer and it is as simple as that. Shearing the wool off a sheep has been done for at least 2700 years. To be exact since the 7th century BEFORE CHRIST WAS BORN. Deuteronomy 18:3-5 3 This shall be the priests’ due from the people, from those offering a sacrifice, whether an ox or a sheep: they shall give to the priest the shoulder, the two jowls, and the stomach. 4 The first fruits of your grain, your wine, and your oil, as well as the FIRST OF THE FLEECE OF YOUR SHEEP, you shall give him. 5 For the Lord your God has chosen Levi out of all your tribes, to stand and minister in the name of the Lord, him and his sons for all time. Further back in Genesis 3:21 21 The Lord God used animal skins and made some clothes for the man and his wife. Then he put the clothes on them. Yours sincerely Joanne Crawford.
