I do think a case can be made that Critical Theory has an outsize influence (not necessarily pernicious) in some departments and disciplines, but very few people I know (at least who are not in the bidness) have ever heard of it, or even of the prominent figures involved. I take the fact that the Walter Benjamin-inspired Wings of Desire was a Mormon date movie as illustrative. Theres a nice essay from a decade ago on how these pretty technical and difficult philosophical ideas became fodder for subliterate rightwing conspiracy theories at the Southern Poverty Law Center (tied up with all the culture wars crap of the time, and really even earlier with Blooms Closing of the American Mind , the Straussians, etc. in the 80s): splcenter.org/get-informed/intelligence-report/browse-all-issues/2003/summer/reframing-the-enemy
