I dont celebrate Thanksgiving, at least not as the one day out of the year to give thanks for the blessings in my life. It usually works out that much of the family is off school or work so its a perfect time to gather for a good meal and spend time together in a way that is not possible as often as we would like. But a single dedicated day of the year to give thanks implies that I, we are ungrateful through the other 364. Instead, our goal, or at least my goal is to be truly thankful for everyday. Some days I succeed, some days I do not. Its easy to be thankful for the good things in our lives, a loving family, a good job, financial security. The challenge is being grateful when things dont go our way. Its like surviving a car wreck. The first instinct is often despair. Yet when the fog of war lifts, we should be thankful we survived the experience. Failure is often the greatest experience in our lives. In fact we learn far more through correcting our mistakes than we do through repeated success. In the end, I strive to discover that which is good in every experience. Sometimes I fail to find the good and sometimes it simply does not exist. But one cannot succeed or fail if one does not first try. The meaning of life is found in the journey itself. Whether or not we find the good, one should always be grateful for the opportunity to try. The best way to show ones gratitude is by paying it forward through simple acts of kindness, not to glorify ones self but to teach others to find good in their own lives. I dont need an act of Congress to do this. Take a moment to watch this video. I hope it touches you the way it did me. While the action of the story is significant, its the true spirit of thanksgiving that makes it special.
