I dont conceptually understand revenge. Literature and television - TopicsExpress

I dont conceptually understand revenge. Literature and television and movies indicate that it is never a good idea, often mistaken, ruins the life of the revenger more than that of the person they want to make pay for something ... why would it ever be a good idea or an option for a rational or even semi-rational person? Why would I choose an option that has a higher chance of wasting my time and energy? Why would I believe that making someone pay for wronging me would undo or change anything? It wouldnt even do the bare minimum of making me feel better, so what is the freaking point? I get it as a plot device, but this is what is making me question it - can I write a character motivated by something that is utterly alien to me?
