I dont feel sorry for a player who turns down a guaranteed $14.1M - TopicsExpress

I dont feel sorry for a player who turns down a guaranteed $14.1M and is having trouble getting a contract. A huge lesson is being learned by a few free agents the past 2 offseasons. Unless you are a Super Star, you will probably regret turning down qualifying offers. Nine players received the $13.3M qualifying offer after the 2012 season. Only 5 of those 9 players signed contracts with a higher AAV (average annual value) than the $13.3M that they turned down. They all received more money overall than the $13.3M, but when you break down years and dollars, it probably wasnt the best idea for the other 4 to turn down the qualifying offers. Now, this offseason, 13 players received the $14.1M qualifying offer and all 13 rejected it. Not a smart move for several of them. 8 of the 13 signed contracts for with a higher AAV than the $14.1M qualifying offer. Ubaldo Jimenez signed a 4 yr deal with an AAV of $12.5M, and it is being reported that Nelson Cruz took a 1 yr deal for $8M. So it was not a wise decision for Cruz to turn down the qualifying offer. There are 3 other players who were not smart to turn down the qualifying offers this year either. Stephen Drew, Kendrys Morales, and Ervin Santana still have yet to find a team with Spring Training already underway. Here is a breakdown of qualifying offer signings These players received $14.1M qualifying offer after 2013 season: Robinson Cano signed for 10 yrs $240M ($24M AAV) Jacoby Ellsbury signed for 7yrs $153M ($21.85M AAV) Shin-Soo Choo signed for 7 yrs $130M ($18.57M AAV) Brian McCann signed for 5 yrs $85M ($17M AAV) Mike Napoli signed for 2 yrs $32M ($16M AAV) Hiroki Kuroda signed for 1yr $16M ($16M AAV) Carlos Beltran signed for 3 yrs $45M ($15M AAV) Curtis Granderson signed for 4 yrs $60M ($15M AAV) Ubaldo Jimenez signed for 4 yrs $50M ($12.5M AAV) Nelson Cruz reportedly agreed to 1 yr $8M ($8M AAV) Stephen Drew still has yet to sign Kendrys Morales still has yet to sign Ervin Santana still has yet to sign These players received $13.3M qualifying offer after 2012 season: Josh Hamilton signed for 5 yrs $125M ($25M AAV) B.J.
