I dont know if it is possible to repress a polymath. They have unquenchable curiosity and desire to learn. It is just that against the rising sea of monomaths whose devotion to one topic naturally overshadows the gifted polymath, the polymaths simply stand out less both against experts and against educated laymen whereas in the past they stood out grandly against both groups. The truth is that one cannot contribute to the advancement of knowledge they do not have. Monomaths are not going to advance the synergy of knowledge from many disciplines from their position of being thoroughly steeped in only one...or two. So, while polymaths may not shine as brightly the will still exist and they will still produce the advancement of perceptions that require a broad, diverse grasp of the world of present knowledge.
