I dont know of a single person who agrees with me. but Im putting this out there--if you want to start playing Christmas songs now, I say go ahead. If you want to string up your lights--thats great. I love the lights, they make me feel good--if theyre up 6 weeks instead of 4, there will be no righteous indignation from me. Every year that Ive been alive, people say that Christmas has gotten too commercial. I think thats what Linus says in A Charlie Brown Christmas which, if memory serves, goes back to around 1965. So, no--things arent going to hell in a handbasket, we just didnt have 3,000 CVS stores with shelves to stock ornaments and such back then. Besides, who made up the rules that you cant talk about Christmas until the day after Thanksgiving? Who cares? At my age, I have realized just how fleeting all of this is--how quickly years come and go. If we can extend the period during which people are generally kinder, more prone to charitable giving, more apt to think about making others happy--even if its with a bloody X-Box or whatever--its still parents thinking about bringing smiles to their kids faces. And please dont start with the real reason for Christmas argument--if you believe that Jesus was born on December 25th, 0000, then partaking in the holiday spirit doesnt really diminish that. If you think Christmas takes a lot of its properties from festivals that pre-date any mention of Christ, and that its essentially a holiday that was somewhat borrowed and renamed--also fine with me. People of every religion and ethnicity around the globe celebrate Christmas in one way or another--you know why? Because its a good idea, thats why. To string lights and sing songs and to give to others, its a no lose proposition. The right wingers on Fox trot out their War On Christmas trope every year because they hate everything the government does--even when its simply following the forefathers design to keep government and religion separate--but MORE people partake in Christmas festivities than ever, not fewer. So stop with that one. If you want to buy a big screen TV on Thanksgiving night, instead of falling asleep on the couch while the football games are playing--thats (you guessed it) fine with me. Other people are working at the stores--not usually under duress, and for extra pay--you know why? Probably so they can get gifts for their kids, too. Its all inter-connected. Its all gone in the blink of an eye. And then what do we do? Start counting down to Christmas again. So, nobody has to join me if they dont want to, but Im tuning in the Christmas music channel on my satellite radio, and Im enjoying looking at the ornaments for sale on the store shelves--yes, even though Thanksgiving hasnt arrived. So--Merry Christmas-Happy Holidays!!! Now, shut up and enjoy the season.
