I dont know the late Dr Richard Teo, a 40-year-old millionaire and cosmetic surgeon who died of lung cancer in Oct 2012, but I have met quite a few people like him who thought that success is about accumulating material wealth, awards and about being among the rich and famous. I remember trying to persuade one - a millionaire who owns properties in various parts of the world and several cars - to contribute $5,000 to help the needy in the community, an amount he would spend in one evening with friends at one dinner. He said no. It is also a constant effort trying to persuade some young professionals to serve the community with a full heart, as they hanker after the material trappings of life. But I have also met others who do spend time and effort to serve in the community, not expecting anything in return - except perhaps to take heart that by loving and serving others, one has lived well. I hope this sharing by Dr Teo will remind us what it means, to live well.
