I dont know what should be ones goals and objectives for attending international conferences like the BELTA conferences,ie.e, presenting i papers, running workshops or making poster presentations or just attending? . One should not go there and just strut and fret ones allotted time on the stage and then be heard no more. Mine are as follows: (a) to present something practical to fellow participants in the most suitable way possible and convince them that what I am presenting is usable and useful to them and therefore should be used, This is VERY DIFFICULT to achieve because attendees generally dont care about the contents of a presentation after the conference, if not after the presentation, (b) meet other people who are working in the same field and make some arrangements to work collaboratively with them in a team environment because Nobody is perfect but a team can be, But this is also DIFFICULT. Most people like to work alone, not in a team member and Bengalis do not like to SHARE and therefore the word SHARE is not (sharing an idea etc) does not exist in the Bengali language - or does it?(c) visit a new place, have a holiday get to know new people, make new friends, enjoy the local culture including food - dance and sing with the local people, if possible. This is not so difficult, I have found. So at the BELTA conference I shall be mainly concentrating on this last option. I will be singing the song Enjoy yourself, it is later than you think/ Enjoy yourself while youre still in the pink/ The years go by/ As quickly as a wink/ Enjoy your self, its later than you think. I am hoping that young English learners who will listen to this baul from Australia singing in his hoarse and old voice, will instantntly y translate this and other English songs into Bengali and some regional dialects. Similarly someone can sing some popular Bengali songs and the learners will translate them into English. That will ELT, dont you think.? We will do these during tea and lunch breaks.
