I dont know where these random memories come from, but here is another from my freshman year of HS. For those that have ever been bullied, or know someone who has, this is my tail of my beautiful friend Dena Stacks. Dena was a basketball player. A good one. She was on the varsity team as a pointguard before any other freshman. She had been my friend for a few years, and her confidence in her own skin made her a magnet. She wore the styles of the day without giving in to the slovenly garb of most HS kids. She was put together with dress pants, button down shirts and penny loafers. There were many groups in HS: The jocks, the nerds, the druggies. She was one of the jocks. We had a common area in the school and kids would gather there between classes. I recall a girl, I believe her name was Ginger. She was short, wore too much make-up and hung with the druggie kids. On this particular occasion, I remember Ginger approaching Dena with a rather firm tap on the shoulder with her posse lurking in the background. Dena politely excused herself from her conversation and turned to face her with hands in pockets and standing to her full height, some 2-3 inches taller than this gal even in her Candies 4 inch heeled slip-ons. Gingers eyes darted from side to side as she pronounced, I heard you called me a B****.. To my knowledge, Dena had never said a word about this girl, and yet without flinching, she shifted her weight into her hip and declared, Yeah, so what?. Clearly this Ginger was not used to having a challenge met with such obvious apathy! She squirmed and saw that noone in her group was strong enough to back her up. She was left standing before her intended target, with a new target on her own back. She shuffled a bit, and said, Well, dont let it happen again.. Dena stared at her until she slunk away to rejoin her group, then resumed her own conversation without further interruption. Bullies prey on the weak. Always have and always will. To show weakness is to make yourself a target. I have told my own boys to NEVER start a fight, but do not EVER be a victim! I will, and have backed them up in those moments. Heres to the heroes!! Dena Stacks is one of mine!
