I dont like hearing Downtowns really need our help these days. We get the downtowns we deserve. And when we do civic stuff its WE who were helping. Its WE who need the help, who need to live lives worth living, and that only happens in community and in cities the downtowns are how we get that. Downtowns are distillations of towns. Theyre towns on overdrive. Downtowns are just results, symptoms. A city with a dead downtown has lame people, is all. Yeah, maybe you can kinda make a downtown revival happen to a small extent, but until the people are ready to live it wont take. And people who are alive cant be stopped. Their downtown could be a hovel and it would be fun, hoppin, inspiring AT ALL LEVELS -- the place where the best action goes down and everyone is part of it. When the cool stuff has to try to happen scattered out in polebarns out at the freeway exits, well, itll never be very cool. Thats what happens where too many of the people are lame -- not cool enough to be citizens and neighbors. A divided city seems a problem, too: if a hoppin but humble place starts to look better its leaders can make the mistake of driving away the inspiration, or some of the levels of people -- and thats asking for trouble as well.
