I dont much care for sports these days or have what they call hero to root for, but I did when I was a kid. I use to love to watch Gordie Howe play hockey, especially on Hockey Night in Canada. My parents would scream and yell during the game and my Dad would say watch him in the corners. It seems only Gordie Howe skated out, the other player was on the ice. You use to be able to see people like him in public and I did when I was young, like seeing some super hero in the flesh. I seen him later during the Newspaper Strike here in Detroit. He would come out to the spaghetti dinners and sell and sign his book in support of the Strikers. One time when he was signing books, he had a short sleeve shirt on. I had to see that elbow that would flatten players in the corners. It had a knot as big as a fist on it. He turned around, jerked his arm and smiled at me.He did it for the Teamsters because his boys grew up playing hockey in their league. So tonight my heart goes out to him and his family in this tough time. And Thanks for letting me feel like a kid again.
