I dont often rant on here, but my level of concern has just hit an all time high. Every morning I get up around 4-5 so I can drink some coffee and dissect the news. We have a problem in our country and it appears there is no readily available solution. I have not seen this amount of racial unrest since the 60s. Yesterday, 2 policemen were killed over what one person felt was their obligatory duty to avenge a judicial process they disagreed with. We all know our judicial system has flaws, but it is the one that has worked in this country for over 200 years. I wholeheartedly disagree with our presidents position that peaceful protests will lead to change. I havent seen anything peaceful from these protests as there seems to be some overzealous idealist that sets off a powder keg. Martin Luther King marched a long time ago. And he did so, peacefully, because he was a strong leader who believed in what marched for. He did not burn buildings, loot, or kill. People followed his lead and allowed the powers in office to begin to enact change. I read something this morning regarding our presidents view towards Cuba. The quote was by engaging directly with the Cuban people, Americans are more likely to encourage reform in Cubas one-party system and centrally planned economy. I shake my head. While the thought of cuban cigars and pristine beaches sound appealing, did everyone forget the Bay of Pigs? A time when the whole world held its collective breath as a full blown nuclear war was imminent if the leader of either country flinched? Americans marching and engaging with the Cuban people are not going to change a communist countrys ideals. A strong leadership by our president, and supported by our congress is what it will take. The unrest in our country does not appear to be ending anytime soon. Protests and violence are not going to reverse a judicial decision already made. Your elected officials are the ones who can enact change. Not the shop owners whose business was burned, not the patrolman killed in his car. Everyone has to do their part to get this country back on track, and for the majority of us that are not elected officials, that means to be a productive and law abiding citizen. Ok, rant over.
