I dont often take pride in accomplishments, i only look at them as a rung on a ladder toward the top of whatever i am doing. However, last night i had a lot of time to reflect on my most recent climb. Last year at this time the longest distance i had run was 7 miles, on sidewalks, flat, no obstacles; it took me over 3 hours and i was dead at the end. I have never ever been a runner. I was and still am a hockey player. I hit hard and fought well, but had little in the way of speed or true skill. I thought running was for little skinny guys in short shorts. Flash forward to the last two weeks and i ran against some of the best runners and best athletes in the country, and held my own. Not saying i am in their league yet, but i was right there with them. Considering yesterday was only my 5th elite or competitive level race and that I am completely self taught and trained. I am pretty damn happy with that. I have a job that has long hours and I cant train all day or take off to mountains to truly hone my craft. I am not a crossfitter and i dont belong to a gym or running club. All my training comes from my head and i do it alone. I think, as i get older, it is important to stop and take reflections of ones accomplishments no matter how small or big, and enjoy them, but also to let you know what you are capable of, and that with hard work anything really is possible. Thats it for a Sunday morning. You can all thank me later, now that you can skip church because you just heard the gospel of Justin. Amen!
