I dont rant because I have a hate on for French people. I have umpteen French friends who will tell you this. I also have two of three sons in French Immersion. A second language is a beautiful thing. I rant because of the money being wasted on bilingualism when honestly we could all figure it out amongst ourselves. For example, I couldnt count the times Ive been in a gas station or store and have given driving directions to a French person in French. Why? Because its the language theyre comfortable with and understand best....and, because Im not an asshole. The same has happened to me when Ive been in a French community trying to get directions to a hockey rink or ordering food in a restaurant. People will try their best to speak to me in English. Why? Because theyre nice and want to help. Were New Brunswickers. Why cant we just give jobs to the most qualified people and level it out? I guarantee you there are proportionately qualified people who speak both languages out there to fill every job. Im done. My next post will be about butternuts or turtles or Scottish independence. I truly love you all.
