I dont really care about thanksgiving. Im thankful that my son is still young enough that I can mold him and steer him away from the situations that lead to so many young black males lives lost prematurely. If he could comprehend what I was saying I would tell him half the world loves him and but also half the world hates him, just because he is. And some of the world that hates him, looks just like him! If he asked why, I would say theres no real reason, other than your different and being different makes people uncomfortable, and some people fearful. Some people will fear your presence and your very existence, even as you go about exercising the same rights they do everyday, yet take for granted. You are being judged by these people off not just your actions, but based off of history and the actions of other young men that looked like you but that were possibly lost in this world. So when you encounter these people, whether they be white, black, or brown, avoid confrontation at all cost. Im not telling you to be less of a man or to be afraid, but to be smarter. Bullets have no learning curve. They dont care about your age, mental capacity, or understanding of life. Guns give people power, and when your old enough you will own one and be taught to use it responsibly as it is your right allowed by law, and earned through the blood of your ancestors. Remember to avoid confrontation, and obey the law and respect authority. You dont have any reason to break it, you have been given more than enough tools from your parents, and the sky is truly the limit for you, aspire to anything you can dream of and it is possible. But if your confronted and cannot escape defend yourself, like your life depends on it. Because it does. Dont depend on a imperfect system to get it right because they probably wont. So if your in a terrible situation, you must win, you have no choice. Because I would rather live to see you judged by 12, than carried by 6. #trayvonmartin #johncrawford #tamirrice and countless others never witnessed by cameras or social media who were killed simply enjoying the same rights others take for granted daily.
