I dont share this for my Orthodox friends on FB. Im sure there is much of it with which theyd take issue. I share it because I understand the allure of enchantments of various sorts - because there comes a time when supposedly greener pastures tempt, when current situations seem just too heavy and cumbersome. The crosses God gives us usually do. Enchantment is wanting to go where life looks and feels more like you think it should, where YOU feel more like you want, where the past is dust settling behind your feet, where the assault-inflicted wounds can start to heal, where youve got at least a little respite from the constant reminders of your faults and failings, and maybe others can get on a little better without you. Of course, as Pr. Weedon says toward the end of this hour-long segment, OUR works and actions wont gain the peace were really longing for. Such is only truly given us in Christ and His Mercy, wherever we are. That doesnt mean there arent times when moving on is proper; where a person should escape abuse, where a man may lay down his arms in good conscience, where a soldier may seek a different set of orders. God can give orders in that regard, as He sees fit; and He often does. We may petition Him in that regard, as His dear children, but we are His and not our own, and He knows best the care we need. While Ive not been tempted by what Pr. Weedon considered and shares here, I do know the allure of escape and the desire to find a get out of whatever Im going through free card. I know how tempting it is to want out from under orders. So, if youve felt that and are tired of how youre feeling, of looking around and wondering why life looks one way on paper and another in the flesh - in YOUR flesh - as it so often does in mine, I think Pr. Weedons first hour of a two-part presentation at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ft. Wayne, IN would be worth your time. It was worth mine this morning. Yes, it has his own wrestling with the current state of Lutheran faith and practice and his dealing with his considering a move East as its focus, but I think it can apply to other struggles, other temptations, other enchantments, so to speak. Plus, its just a really good review in Reformation Month of what we confess and have received as Lutherans! In revisiting such, I think it breathes an air of hope for all of us who feebly struggle. https://youtube/watch?v=Xyzb4NT4O1Y
