I dont subscribe to these gender-biased sentiments of reserving a percentage of jobs or positions for women. People should get jobs or positions based on merit[and I know many women who merit their positions and more]. Instead, I believe for example that if the girl child to boy child population ratio is say 2 to 1, then this should be reflected in primary school enrollment. The same should apply to every form of education or training in any sector. That is the root of the gender issue, and that is where it ought to be tackled. Some people are beginning to sound like theyre doing women a favour. Some of the women I know dont need favours. They can hold their own anywhere. Currently, in Nigeria, for every girl in school, there are 2 boys(3 boys in Northern Nigeria). We MUST also bear in mind the fact that it does not help a childs development to have an illiterate mother. We MUST educate our girls so they can grow up to be mothers that will EDUCATE our future children. Isnt it said after all, that 60% of education is at home...
