I dont tend to post statuses often. Facebook has become somewhat of a too often reminder that my friends are getting engaged, married, and having babies… not always in that order. Still, tonight has proven to me that I must speak my opinion on the Senate race taking place in Mississippi. While Im sure many of you quit reading after that last sentence, for those of you who continue, I will not subject you to the nasty mud slinging done by both parties, nor will I spy on your elder family members if you disagree with my opinion. Senator Thad Cochran has done a tremendous amount for this state. If you dont believe me, take a look at the amount of money that is endowed to our public universities. Places with great history and a bright future like the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where the first ever heart and lung transplant were performed by Dr. James Hardy in the early 60s. UMMC also made headlines when they found no traces of virus after intensively treating an infant for HIV. Then there is also Mississippi State University, which has advanced the agriculture industry in Mississippi and also holds one of the top Veterinary Medicine programs in the US. We should have a Senator who can look out for our schools and other forms of federal funding. In a state that is last in every good category and first in every bad category, I take pride in what it has accomplished. Some of its best accomplishments couldnt have been possible without Senator Cochran. Senator Cochran is in line to be the Chairman of Senate Appropriations Committee when the Republican Party takes control of the Senate. This gives him a vast amount of influence and power over how much funding Mississippi receives. I understand you may want to cut federal spending, but who has the better opportunity to do that? The man who is about to be the Appropriations Committee Chairman or the man with one of the top five worst attendance and voting records in the Mississippi State Senate? Chris McDaniel likes to classify federal spending in Mississippi as pork. Is that what the disaster relief money was when Hurricane Katrina hit? Or was it a necessary asset to reestablishing communities on Mississippis Gulf Coast? Is it not pork that keeps Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi the states largest private employer and one of the largest producers of ships for the United States Navy (in other words, they produce freedom, thousands of tons of metal freedom). It upsets me how blindly some people follow the Tea Party and consider them the conservative champions of politics. Look at their track record in Congress. Seriously, find a bill or amendment backed by the Tea Party Caucus that has passed through the House or Senate. Better yet, research the Tea Party Caucus, which should be the organization of all Tea Party members in Congress, and youll see they have not met or convened since July of 2012. What does Chris McDaniel expect to do? Walk into Congress like a one man wrecking ball? While refreshing twitter frantically over the past few hours, I could not help but notice the amount of support the Tea Party put behind Chris McDaniel. Come to find out, almost all of that support came from out of state sources. Since when did Rick Santorum, Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin become legitimate advocates for who should represent Mississippi in Congress? (And by legitimate I mean having the slightest knowledge of whats best for Mississippi or doing absolutely anything that has made Mississippi a better place). Mississippis past and present leaders all support Senator Cochran: Governor Haley Barbour Trent Lott Governor Phil Bryant Lt. Governor Tate Reeves Senator Roger Wicker Congressman Gregg Harper Congressman Alan Nunnelee State Auditor Stacey Pickering Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann The leaders of our state understand the importance of re-electing Senator Thad Cochran. You should too. Mississippi needs a Senator who has proven his ability to take care of us in the good times, as well as the bad. Re-elect Senator Thad Cochran.
