I dont think being described as fat should feel insulting. Fat is an adjective -- no different from skinny, tall, short, dark, and pale. Slim people get flak for fat shaming, but the reality is, we fat people have a hand in it too. We attach a negative connotation to the word fat when we dont have to. We treat it like a curse word, always looking for euphemisms that sound better -- chubby, curvy, plus-sized, big-boned. This may be the journ major in me talking, but fat seems like the most accurate and succinct description for an overweight person. We think being called fat is offensive because it reminds us that we literally dont fit into the ideal mould of beauty. But there shouldnt be any shame in being fat. We arent lesser people just because we are a heavier weight. As Eleanor Roosevelt said, No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.
