I dont think people in Thailand realise the challenge the rice subsidy scheme presented to neo-liberal economics. It basically redistributed money directly to the poor and cut out traders, middle-men and business people who derive their living by feeding off ordinary people. It inverted the trickle down theory and made it trickle-up, putting US$billions into the hands of the poor. This is why the Western media - some, like Jonathan Head, who live off of subsidies themselves - collaborated with the destruction of the scheme. For investment bankers like Korn Chatikavanij and the companies like JP Morgan which he serves a scheme like this was revolutionary. It simply had to be stopped even if it involved a coup. The only people who are allowed subsidies are bankers and billionaires and the lackeys - like Jonathan Head - who serve them. And amidst all this theres the grand diversion of royalist gossip, rumour and conspiracy theory. Dont look at your real conditions, look at this mindless diversion.
