I dont think that people really understand why celebrities get so - TopicsExpress

I dont think that people really understand why celebrities get so much attention when they die (Robin Williams being the obvious example here). Think of it this way: If a random person committed suicide, or died by any means really, then would you be upset? Perhaps you would feel bad for them, but you have no relationship, so it would realistically have a low impact. If somebody very close to you died, like a relative or a best friend, then the impact would obviously be infinitely greater. You would be devastated. The progression in between is rather linear. If someone that you were acquainted with had died, then you would certainly be impacted. That impact would be far greater than the impact that a random death would have on you. Returning to celebrities, they are not random, at least for most of the population. People like Robin Williams and Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson are not only acquaintances, albeit non-mutually. For a significant majority they are role models, childhood memories, entertaining escapes. You have known these celebrities for longer than most of your friends, and some of them have undoubtedly made a relatively large impact on you. That is why they receive such great attention. They are never random deaths, as they mean a lot to so many people, and so many people are acquainted with them. Of course, the magnitude of the impact will vary based upon the particular connection of each person to said celebrity, but there exists a connection nonetheless. So shut up about all of the mourning about celebrity deaths while people are dying in Chicago or in Africa or whatever. Sure, those deaths are bad, but people are hardly emotionally invested in them since they just dont have a relationship with the deceased; the most that they can do is feel sorry. On top of that, is it suddenly impossible to be concerned with multiple things, death or otherwise, at one time? Unless every unfortunate situation you find yourself in is accompanied by the thought, but people in Gaza have it worse, it is not fair for you to cast off concern for any other event.
